I am a primary care physician and ID consultant in a thriving, but small (34 physicians), multi-specialty practice in Westchester County, New York.  Over the past 33 years, I have been engaged in basic science research, teaching, and clinical care.  I am committed to finding ways to improve our healthcare system.   It seems clear to me that the very high price tag of American healthcare is due, in part, to the fact that consumers have been unaware and unconcerned about healthcare costs.  Without transparency of cost and quality, consumers will continue to purchase care of variable quality, for fees that can differ by a factor of 10 or more, from one location to another. Educating and engaging consumers about cost and quality must be part of the solution going forward.
